An interview with Gaetano Cherubini

* As winner of Second Prize in the in the 2000 International Art Contest, being selected by such a diverse group of artists from all around the world, how do you feel?

Flattered, pleased, surprised.

* Please describe your current works and any plans for forthcoming exhibits.

I'm working on some large wood pieces and might have a show in Rome in the spring.

* If any, in what ways have you seen changes in attitudes towards "art"?

It's become less pure and more of a cold investment.

* Do you think that the fine artist will survive as technology replaces our skills?

I certainly hope so.

* What advice could you give to those embarking upon a career as an artist?

Be true to yourself but have a job you can fall back on if necessary.

* Why did you enter the Art Dept contest and what decided your selection for entry?

I entered on a whim and chose my entry because it's part of me.

* Is there anything about being an artist that you do not like?

It affects my whole life... I can't just not go to my studio. It's part of me.

* Would you sell your most favourite artwork, or keep it?

I would talk myself into selling it to someone who understands it.

* How important was education and training to you?

Not essential but certainly useful.

* Is there anything in your art career that you would have changed?

A lot. For example, I would have started earlier andI wouldn't have wasted time when I was younger.

* If you were invited overseas to exhibit your works, where would you like that to be?

In France, England, the U.S, Australia, a place that's receptive to art.

* Are you looking forward to entering the contest for next year?

I'm not sure yet. I don't usually plan that far ahead.

* Do you recommend use of the Internet for an artist's publicity?

Yes and no. One has to be careful on the net to avoid scams, etc. It's certainly worth a try.

* Would you change anything about how the contest is organised?

I don't think so.

* How can the Internet be made better for working artists?

By improving and approving on an international level (certification?) art sites. Some sites try to take advantage of artist but many are "safe".
